A surprise vacation in digital photos

The South Ponte Vedra beach along the Costal Highway - the scenic route back from St. Augustine to Jacksonville. Warning sign telling us that there were no life guards and strong currents. Also, very pretty of the reedy type grasses that grew. Beautiful area.

There's me, sitting at the Castillo de San Marcos. Very beautiful, a little creepy and definitely gives me a new respect for soldiers in that period. 'cause just walking into those dark, small rooms was roughing it for me!

Woolsworth sign on a restaraunt/toyshop that had gone out of business (The St. Augustine Toy Company, IIRC). The door plates obviously date earlier, because Woolsworths are a Ye Olde thing. I took the picture to show my mom, 'cause that's sort of something she'd remember.

Grave at the Huguenot Cemetary in St. Augustine, the only non-Catholic burial grounds until Florida changed hands. One Catholic guy is buried there (this isn't his grave, btw) for belonging to the Masonic Lodge, which precluded him from burial in a Catholic cemetary. The veterans were out there collecting donations and such. Very pretty stones, some of them. Also very interesting. Makes modern tombstones look very boring. Also, makes our life span look LONG, because most of these people were mid-40's when they died.

Andrew in a replication boat in the St. Augustine visitor's center. Cheesy photo op. Moving swiftly along. Also: he's just too cute. Pirate references abounded.

A shot from the ceiling of the Greek Orthodox Shrine in St. Augustine. Interesting history of the people who founded New Smyrna then fled back to St. Augustine when New Smyrna turned out to be a bust. Very beautiful, though. Had free refreshments, nice music, and was shady.

Me with a sword in a sword/weapons shop in St. Augustine. There was in fact a BIG HUGE broadsword bearing the inscription "MacLeod". Yes, I squeed. Yes, I tried to pick it up. No, I did not succeed in picking it up. Surprisingly, big swords are very heavy and I kinda now respect anyone on Highlander who had to wield one of those monsters and make it look easy. The sword I'm holding however was nice and jeweled. Had a good heroic feel to it. It's my favorite. Also? Didn't give me a hernia lifting it. There were also axes, nunchucks, a suit of armor, and various other implements of destruction (five points for reference spotting!).

Another shot of South Ponte Vedra Beach along the Coastal Hwy.

Very beautiful shot taken by Andrew. He has a good eye.

A landscape of the Castillo de San Marcos.

Another landscape of the Castillo de San Marcos. Interesting and somewhat silly story: we got there in time to see them do a canon firing demonstration, but missed the first part of the spiel. So after they fired it (and the wind carried a backdraft of dirt and gunpowder right into the crowd), I asked "where did the canon ball go?" and I was informed that they did not in fact fire a canon ball from the top of Castillo de San Marcos into the harbor below. Because I am very good with the logic.

This was taken on Tuesday RIGHT after Andrew surprised me at the restaurant. I was shaking and smiling and not believing it, at all. It was a good but slightly shocking moment. Also, I'm all dolled up. A rarity for me.
Definitely going to make it a point to gleepost my way through this week, keep busy, and not give into the urge to devour EVERY piece of remotely tasty food I see before me in an effort to salve my inner turmoil.
I feel that working on the novel, schoolwork (last resort!) and cuddling with the free range furballs is a better solution. They're not the free range Geek!boy that I'm jonesing for, but they're very furry and have absolutely no understanding of turmoil, thus, they could care less unless this turmoil involves something tasty dropping from the table.
Which is good.
So I'm gonna go write and resist the urge to munch like a fiend, you enjoy the pictures, I'll catch up with the f-list and see you tomorrow.

A performance artist we met there asked me if it was a Grateful Dead type shirt. People have asked me that before. The shirt always gets compliments.
