In NY State, a domestic partnership comes with most of the benefits of marriage, meaning we can make decisions for each other, etc, etc. We get no federal benefits, however. It's not recognized out of state, and I'm only on his insurance because he works for the NYPD and city policy is to allow domestic partners to be on insurance.
So, if he ever gets a job that discriminates against domestic partners, then I'll be out the insurance. But hopefully I'll have my own job by then :)
