Did you know, I didn't know – and I live here too and should know, esp. as someday I'll work for the city – that heterosexual couples could be domestic partners? I thought it was common-law marriage and marriage marriage and there was no option to marriage.

Learn something new every day!

Domestic partnerships are for everyone, not just same-sex couples! :)

Not just yet. We do intend to get married later on, but right now we're doing this for both practical reasons and symbolic ones.

And thanks :)

You so totally can! :)

Yep. That is my middle name. It was the name of a good college friend of my mom's. I think as middle names go, it's quite nice. :)

Awesome! Congratulations!!

Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean in NY nowadays?

Thanks for the congrats! :)

In NY State, a domestic partnership comes with most of the benefits of marriage, meaning we can make decisions for each other, etc, etc. We get no federal benefits, however. It's not recognized out of state, and I'm only on his insurance because he works for the NYPD and city policy is to allow domestic partners to be on insurance.

So, if he ever gets a job that discriminates against domestic partners, then I'll be out the insurance. But hopefully I'll have my own job by then :)

Congratulations! And color me wrong. Just the other day, my boy was saying how straight couples can get domestic partnerships, and I was like "I don't think so..."

So thanks for teaching me something new, too!

Thanks!

It's probably a very common misconception that straight couples can't get domestic partnerships, but the forms just say "partner 1" and "partner 2". I think the misconception probably comes from the fact that a) most straight couples can go ahead and get married and b) domestic partnerships are sort of the appeasement the government hands same-sex couples instead of, yanno, doing the right thing and extending marriage rights to all Americans.

But we get most of the rights of married couples. Unless we move out of state, and then other states don't consider us to know each other from Adam as far as they're concerned.

Glad I could help educate people.

As the other partner in the Domestic Partnership I just wanted to thank every one for their congratulations! We didn't know about it either until my co-worker told me that he and his fiancée did it (Ironically we just got home from their wedding which was nice)

In NY domestic partnership gives you some rights, most importantly is being able to get on some insurance plans. Since I work for the city it will be no problem to add Meg to my plan, your millage/employer may vary.
