New York is sometimes noisy
Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:12There really ought to be a timer on car alarms. Because after the first half hour either your car is fine or it's already been stolen. So there's no reason for it to keep annoying everyone in a half-mile radius.
I also think there should be a law that gives you the legal right to spray paint and/or egg any car that has an annoying car alarm that has gone off for more than thirty minutes.
I've closed the windows and I can still hear it. It's almost as bad as the guy in the house next door who, apparently, is undergoing never ending construction and feels that using a very loud table saw at 8:30 at night isn't disruptive or rude at all. Or that Sunday afternoon is a brilliant time for all day jackhammering.
I'm gonna go work off all my crabby energy by cleaning things now.

Date: 6 Aug 2008 20:01 (UTC)srsly tho, the newer alarms *are* supposed to shut off after a period of time (a short period of time too, like 10-15 mins) because theyve found that (obviously) the longer they go off, the less likely anyone is to care.
my sympathies. in college, idiots used to have their alarms going off all the damn time and it was miserable.

Yeah, and if there were any cars on our block worthy of a brand new car alarm, that might be so. But it's slightly dented family sedans as far as the eye can see, so I'm betting this alarm is circa 1990 or something. I'm sure the person who got it was wearing parachute pants at the time. *le sigh*

Yeah, but at least then you could go get the R.A. who had keys and would shut it off. Or at least in my dorms you could. And even better, the R.A. (for her pain and aggrivation on a Saturday morning) would leave a strongly worded note to whomever about making sure their alarms were off *before* they went home for the weekend.

Our dorms were always, like, miles from the parking lots. We never had cars. We had drunk frat boys, but not cars.

Date: 13 Aug 2008 08:33 (UTC)But you know, sometimes if you call the police they'll try to do something about it (normally just get the 4-1-1 and contact the asshole). It is a noise ordinance violation in many places.

Date: 14 Aug 2008 14:09 (UTC)Ditto. I swear, sometimes I really seriously consider leaving a nasty note or egging the person's car. Because, honestly, I think it's sort of rude and disrespectful towards one's neighbors.

I thought about that, but then I remembered that the last time we called to report a stolen car, they forgot about us and didn't come until the next morning. So, I figured it was better to close the windows and turn the music up rather than go through the hassle.
