If someone from the United States wanted to send a letter to someone in the United Kingdom, would that person need special stamps/envelopes to do so, and would it require going to the post office rather than just putting the letter in the mailbox?

If you're mailing a letter, all you have to worry about is postage, no special envelopes or anything required.

Packages are a bit trickier. Usually, you have to put on a customs slip. (I say usually because when I send packages nowadays, it's mail, and they don't require it unless it's a large package.)

You do have to remember the extra postage, but I mail manilla envelopes all the time without actually going and talking to a post office person. I usually do have to stop at a postal machine, but that's because it's easier to use one than put on $5.00 in stamps.
